Volunteering as a Bosom Buddy

Bosom Buddies conducts regular volunteers training programs to prepare new groups of volunteers to provide one-to-one support to women undergoing their breast cancer journey.  It is planned that training will continue quarterly, to update volunteers and build a real team.

How Can YOU Make a Difference?
Volunteer a couple of hours or more...

Support an event or workshop

I helped set up and decorate with my sisters for Christmas in Winter.  We had heaps of fun, met lots of other people and my sister Vicki said something as meaningful as Bosom Buddies brings us all together. (Larissa Sinclair)

Meeting and greeting at a function gives me the opportunity to get to know Bosom Buddies members. (Linda Wright)

Help spread the word and raise funds

BB Stall at Bus Depot Markets
There is real community interest in Bosom Buddies. People are very generous with their donations and purchases. It's also a great way to raise our profile.

Open Gardens
I worked at the first open garden we did and it was fun – meeting people, selling drinks and chatting with other Bosom Buddies. We had some great laughs and an 8-year-old son of a volunteer was selling champion. (Sally Saunders)

Support Community Education

Become a presenter
The warm welcome you receive and the positive reactions to breast awareness talks are a wonderful reward. We have talked to groups from 5 to 150, and from Year 10 students to Aged Care residences – all have invited us and shown a genuine interest in the messages of the importance of early detection of breast cancer and information about the support available. (Marilyn Brookes)

Support those diagnosed with breast cancer

Train to be there for those who need us
Answer phone calls
The words “It’s really helped, talking to somebody else who has been through this” make it really rewarding. (Val Lee)

When you take calls on the helpline, you know you are making a positive difference - sometimes by just being there, other times by helping the caller locate useful information. It is a very rewarding activity.(Celia Burgess)

Take referrals to answer questions and share your story
It’s imparts a feeling of hope for the future to share a ‘survivor’s tale’ with newly diagnosed women.

Qualify to make hospital visits

It’s always a pleasure to visit ladies in hospital after surgery.  The ladies seem to really appreciate talking to a survivor, someone who has already been on the Journey that they have just commenced.  In many instances ladies don’t have a lot family support in Canberra so it’s really important that Bosom Buddies can be there for them.  (Kaye Johnston)

Become a buddy one-to-one

I learnt many coping skills from those who went before me.  It is a pleasure to pass these on to others, to be told I have made a difference, allayed fears, or they feel better about coping with the journey ahead. (Glenise Webb)
